[Unit Project 1] Things I Got from the Dance Contest

This is my artifact

My artifact is a spoon. This is black color. The spoon is specially spoon for eating ice cream. This transfers the heat from your hands and melts the ice cream, making it easier to eat. The spoon was made in Tsubame-Sanjo city.

My artifact was given to me when I won 3rd place in a dance contest when I was 13 years old. At that time, I was able to win a prize in a dance contest for the first time. “I won a prize for the first time! I’m so happy! I have to try harder next time!” I said and cried. The members and their families were very happy. Although I was happy, I also felt that I wanted to aim even higher.

I started dancing when I was three years old. And I started participating in dance contests when I was 10 years old. I was worried about that I would not win the prize. At that time, my mother told me “Let’s take on more challenges,” and I think that’s what led me to 3rd place.

The contest when I was able to win this spoon made me stronger. After that, I won many dance contests. I think the experience of taking 3rd place was very valuable to me. I want to continue dancing and aim high.

I still use this spoon when eating ice cream. “It was a lot if fun and we were happy,” my mother said. I reminisce about the dance contest with my mother.

This spoon is a traditional craft from Niigata Prefecture. The ice cream spoon from Tsubame-Sanjo City is 15 centimeters long and weighs 17 grams. The tip is made as thin and flat as possible. Therefore, it is easy to insert into the ice cream and scoop neatly to the bottom. The part that goes into the mouth has a shallow indentation. As a result, we created a shape that makes it easy to put in and take out the mouth while maintaining a thickness that facilitates heat conduction. This is all done by hand by craftsmen. A high level of technical ability is concentrated for a small spoon.

The recent problem, the number of people making traditional crafts has been decreasing. This is due to the aging of craftsmen and the lack of successors. If this problem is not resolved, Niigata's traditional crafts will disappear. And the techniques that have been passed down from ancient times will also disappear. To solve this problem, it is necessary to get young people interested in metal processing. In my opinion, I think If you can set up a venue for lectures and trial sessions, it will lead to problem solving. Because Metal processing in Tsubame-Sanjo City, Niigata Prefecture is a very famous industry.

  2. Your challenge was nice! This was first time I learned about spoons made in Sanjo City. At the same time, I realized that the problem is that young people don't know about traditional crafts.

  5. It was a very good story about the importance of the 3rd place experience. I know that Sanjo is famous for making spoons, but I don't know what kind of spoons they make, so I would like to buy some next time!
